I’ve Got Your Back, Partner!

Two modern ways to raise partner’s suit: Inverted Minors and Reverse Drury

You have a fit with partner and a good hand. Why does the bidding feel so awkward?

Standard raises leave you guessing. Raise partner’s minor and you may land in 5 of a minor when 3NT was easy. Hold a limit raise (10-12 points with 4-card support) opposite a third-seat opening and you may jump straight past the best contract. In this 2-lesson course, you’ll learn two conventions that solve these problems and let you show partner you’ve got their back.

Sound familiar?

Hand 1. Partner opens 1♦. You hold:

You

♠  K 4

♥  Q 7 3

♦  A J 8 5 2

♣  K 9 6

13 points and five diamonds. Do you jump to 3NT? Raise diamonds? And how will you find out whether every suit is stopped?

Hand 2. You passed, and partner opens 1♠ in third seat. You hold:

You

♠  K 10 8 5

♥  Q 9 3

♦  A Q 3

♣  9 6 2

A perfect limit raise, so you bid 3♠. But partner opened light, and 3♠ goes down. Could you have found out first?

By the end of this course, you’ll know exactly what to do with both hands.

What you’ll learn

Lesson 1 — Inverted Minors (Thursday, December 10)

  • How do we distinguish between a strong hand and a weak hand when both have adequate support?
  • What bids do we make to find out if we belong in 3NT or should play in the minor?
  • How do we choose between 3NT and 5 of the minor?

Lesson 2 — Reverse Drury (Thursday, December 17)

  • Why do we open light in third and fourth seat?
  • Which raise shows a limit raise hand and asks if partner had a legitimate opening hand?

Each class includes
